Teacher Charlyn’s Tip for Teaching Descriptive Writing

One of my favorite ways to help students become stronger descriptive writers is through a simple activity called “Sensory Corners.” I set up five stations around the classroom, one for each of the senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. At each corner, students experience something related to that sense (like smelling a slice of orange or feeling a soft piece of fabric) and write down descriptive words or phrases that come to mind.

This hands-on approach helps students move beyond plain sentences and use vivid, sensory details in their writing. It also makes the lesson fun and interactive, which keeps them engaged. As Teacher Charlyn, I’ve noticed that when students feel what they’re writing about, their words begin to sparkle on the page!
