Supporting Struggling Readers

Greetings everyone! This evening I will share how  we can support struggling readers.

As we know, technology is very prominent in our classrooms and should be used to our advantage. Supporting struggling readers through technology can be done using audio read along books, motion pictures or videos. How does motion pictures or video aid in reading you may wonder? Some important connections students should be able to make are text to self and text to world connections. Being able to do this will open their minds to creating stories for themselves. They can start by orally sharing their stories then attempting to write them. With the aid of imagery and whatever words they have created, students can make connections with aid of the pictures or videos to "read" their stories. Another way we can help struggling readers is through shared guided reading. By exhibiting proper reader techniques, students will mimic what they hear and apply it to texts. Reading together can boost their confidence and decoding skills, encouraging them to read more advanced texts. I believe that struggling readers are like butterflies. They are in their cocoon wating for the perfect time (teacher) to be set free. Though the task may be frustrating, students depend heavily on us educators to help spread their wings.

If there are any other ways you know to help struggling readers, share them below.
