Challenges young writers face

Writing can be such an exciting way for children to share their ideas, but for many young writers, getting started isn’t always easy. Some students stare at a blank page, unsure of what to write, while others struggle to find the right words to describe their thoughts. As future teachers, we have learned that young writers need encouragement and creative support to help their ideas flow. According to Tompkins (2016), activities that guide students through each stage of the writing process can make writing less intimidating and more enjoyable.

One simple yet powerful activity is “Sensory Brainstorming”, where students use their five senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch o describe an experience before they start writing. This not only helps them think more deeply about details but also makes their stories come alive with rich, descriptive language. When children feel supported and inspired, their confidence as writers grows with every sentence they create. Below is an example of Sensory Brainstorming Activity.
